About the HIATLANTIS community edition

The community edition of the HIATLANTIS application is basically meant for call record management. As we convert HIATLANTIS to PostgresSQL and modify the screens, we may release other functionality such as the complete sales manager functionality and fulfillment. These are currently being discussed internally and we welcome you to provide your input on the forums. You may see more of the functionality at http://www.hiatlantis.com.

The move to PostgresSQL

HIATLANTIS was recoded in 2001 using PHP and MySQL from its original COBOL and assembler beginnings. There are no issues with providing open source MySQL applications, but issues with selling commercial applications along with the costs of doing business with MySQL. Having to purchase $10,000 in support services when we have not required support ever using MySQL is only one issue, we had to take a look at alternatives. Technology Alignment has made a decision to move HIATLANTIS to PostgresSQL and is actively modifying the application from MySQL to PostgresSQL.

HIATLANTIS was taken off the market some time ago and used internally only when we ran into problems with the new MySQL licensing. A final decision was made on February 22, 2008 when we came to an impasse on the costs associated in doing business with MySQL and the costs of these applications. They wanted to charge us only $5,000 to start while limiting our abilities to release demos of the commercial application. Actually, the cost to start doing business with MySQL was about $20,000 although they were willing to work with us bringing the initial cost to $10,000. The cost per user was extensive also with minimum charges on both HIATLANTIS and VoIPTelCaster with a minimum charge on VoIPTelCaster of $75.00 plus the cost of the application. This in-turn would have forced us to raise the price of our applications and pass them on to the end-user. We also do not believe that a company should dictate the manner in which a commercial company should do business, as they are doing with us. We also asked how do small companies do business that are providing $20 dollar applications for business using MySQL. The answer was clear to us that anyone doing development on a small scale or selling an application, such as mailing list applications and so on, that they should also be converting their applications.

We believe in charging for our commercial products, as does MySQL, but we can not afford to pass the extraordinary pricing back to the end-user, especially on the low-end, so our decision to move to PostgresSQL was a simple one. The MySQL community edition will still be available on MigrationSERVER and Stagecoach future releases, but will not be installed by default any longer starting with Release version 3.2.0.0 whereas PostgresSQL will the default installed database.

What does this mean to you?

This means that HIATLANTIS will be able to be provided at a lower cost to the end-user on the commercial side and on the open source side you really won't notice a difference between the applications. PostgresSQL is actually a more powerful tool and we've included it with our application and it is also available on Pioneer MigrationSERVER and Stagecoach.

Where can I get HIATLANTIS?

HIATLANTIS will be available in the Cowboy repositories as a fully open source product. You'll also be able to find HIATLANTIS in Automatix 3, which will provide you with an easy installation. Of course Automatix 3 will be available in the Warrior lines and later on both Pioneer Explorer and Pioneer Basic.
